The “Japanese Sea Disaster” refers to an earthquake that occurred on May 26, at 11:59:57  local time (02:59:57 UTC) in the Sea of Japan about 100 km west of the coast of Noshiro. It had a magnitude of 7.8 on the moment magnitude scale with waves exceeding 10 meters (33 ft) in some areas.
